Running in the dark

Tips and top products to help  you run safely in the dark

Feature product: 110g, 200 lumens, rechargeable USB. Just $19.95
Feature product: 110g, 200 lumens, rechargeable USB. Just $19.95

Busy schedules, family life and work commitments are common reasons why most of us are destined to run in the dark when the sun rises and sets before we finished and often times, before we have even started.

Running in the dark does not have to be a burden, with plenty of research showing better sleep after an evening run, increased productivity during the day after a morning run as the sheer exhilaration of running in the dark and maximising your day.

Here are 4 great products that will help you ‘light up the night’

  1. Reflective running gear: We have a fantastic range of reflective gear ideal for night time running that will ensure you are easily seen by other road users improving your visibility.
  2. Running lights: After a lot of testing, we have found some of the best lights around for running. Lightweight and portable, we have flashing lights available that can simply be clipped to a pair of shorts or cap and can be seen for distance of over 300m.
  3. Reflective footwear: Whilst most running shoes we stock have some form of reflective material, the new Asics Lite-Show footwear and apparel are a step above in literally lighting and improving your ability to be seen when out pounding the pavement.
  4. Sunglasses: Yes, you read right, sunglasses for the dark. We have a range of sunglasses available with brighter lens options that will actually enhance your surroundings.

Other things you can do to ensure you are seen

  1. Wear light or fluoro clothing: Colours such as bright yellow, green, orange and white are all safe colours that are more easily seen in the dark.
  2. Wear clothing that feature reflective elements
  3. Avoid wearing dark clothing: Whilst black is flattering on the figure, it does put you into a sort of stealth mode, which is not ideal when the goal is to stand out like a beacon.
  4. If you are wearing a light, make sure you use a red light at the back and a white light on the front (we have both options suitable for running at intraining Running Centre). We often see people out there with a red light on the front, which is actually worse than having no light at all.

Remember, we are in essence vehicles on the road/path so make sure you are lit up like one.

If you have any queries or need assistance with finding anything else to help increase your safety whilst out running, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Did you know running facts – Part 2
Ed Whitlock - Aged 80 Toronto Waterfront MarathonFollowing on from our January newsletter, it is with great sadness that the man with the seemlingly endless fountain of running youth, Ed Whitlock, passed away on 13 March 2017 from prostate cancer, aged 86.

Ed Whitlock was an English-born Canadian long-distance runner, and the first person over 70 years old to run a marathon in less than three hours with an over 70 PB time of 2:54:48. Not to mention running a marathon in 3:15:54 at the age of 80. Ed has a range of  records for his age most of which are quite simply, impossible to believe. Check them out here.

Asics technical apparel ensures you are seen
Safety and style first…a bright decision to make
As the days continue to shortern and we are more often than not faced with running in low light conditions, it is time to start thinking about how well you are seen out running. When it comes to safety, we are all for high visibility clothing and we have a range available in store.

Image for fit purpose only. Colours may varyWhilst HI-VIS fluoro coloured clothing provide fantastic safety features, there are some of us who prefer something a little more subtle. Enter Asics’ latest range of Lite-Show apparel and footwear.

The new range of Lite-Show apparel introduced by Asics features a new technology where reflective fibres are woven directly into the fabric and bounce light back directly to it’s source.

Standard reflective clothing and Asics Lite-Show
– Lite-Show does not wear out and is permanent part of the thread.
– Lite-Show features 360 degree reflectivity.
– Increased surface area of visibility, ensuring you are seen by others.

If you are keen to increase your visibility and looking for an alternative to the fluoro hi-vis running gear to be seen, the new Asics Lite-Show range is a bright decision to make.

At intraining Running Centre, we have a range of technical running apparel for Autumn and Winter seasons that will help increase your visibility out on the road.

Ankle Sprains – Doug James (physiotherapist and podiatrist)
Overcoming ankle sprain injuries – The how to…
Click here to learn more about ankle sprainsAnkle sprains are a common running injury that can result in minor short term impairment through to severe pain and chronic instability. Ankle sprain injuries can arise from seemingly innocuous event, such as stepping on a slightly uneven surface or stone, through to more predictable occurrences eg slipping during an evening trail run in wet conditions.

The ankle is most commonly sprained in an inverted position – this is where the lateral (outside) part of the foot tilts downwards and the force of your bodyweight and momentum causes one or more of the ligaments on the outside ankle bone to stretch.

Ankle sprain injuries are typically assigned a grading from 1 to 3 based on the degree of damage to the ligaments. If you are interested in finding out more about ankle sprain treatment, rehab and other information, click here to view the full article in March’s From the Sole enews.

NEW ASICS Flytefoam

Lightweight and durable – A shoe that does it all

DS Trainer 22: Featuring NEW ASICS Flytefoam

The DS Trainer is the high mileage trainer designed with the runner looking for a lightweight shoe with fantastic ground feedback. Whilst the NEW DS Trainer 22 boasts an incredibly low weight, combined with Flytefoam technology it also does not disappoint in cushioning you for the long run.

The DS Trainer 22 incorporates a lean and flexible upper with a durable, rear deceleration-focused midsole to give the result of a light weight, yet safe shoe that delivers for those wanting the best of the cushioned and lightweight worlds.

A closer look at DS Trainer 22

Upper

Fully breathable mesh surrounds the whole dorsum, sides and rear of the upper. Moisture is drained immediately when running in long winter grass or in drizzly conditions. The tongue and interior rear portion of the shoe are lined with memory foam for ease of getting into the shoe and reduced blister likelihood. This feature alsAsicsFlyteFoam_DSTrainer1o makes it an entirely practical shoe for triathlon racing where socks are optional and feet are often wet.

The most notable functional improvement in upper design lies in the heel composition. The exoskeleton wraps lower and more anterior, resulting in less medial displacement at initial contact and less overall total rearfoot eversion movement compared to its predecessor. I.e. it is more protective of rearfoot pronation speed and total amount.

Midsole

The above kinematic improvement in rearfoot pronation is also attributed to the shoes’ midsole.

The Dynamic Duomax midsole design is a combination of two midsole densities strategically placed to help reduce the brake force at contact and also promote propulsive acceleration at take-off. The soft, more comfortable layer is primarily what the sole of the foot feels. The firmer layer is placed deeper under the shoe, along the medial arch and rear foot to help resist arch deformation.

The FlyteFoam midsole material is made from a combination of Kevlar and polyester PET fibres (organic fibres. This is very light and boasts both high stretch and high compression resistance, giving major durability under subjective wear testing.

The Propulsion Trusstic is a regular feature of Asics performance shoes and has been constantly refined. As the rear and forward compartments of the shoe twist throughout the midstance phase, Propulsion Trusstic gathers this potential energy to push momentum forward through the central part of the shoe. It is an integral feature in forward, fast movement required for the efficient runner.

OutsoleAsicsFlyteFoam_DSTrainer2

The outsole suits the rest of the shoe. It wears at the rate that the rest of the shoe does, not lasting unnecessarily longer or less. It is well designed to give just enough cushion feel at strike and grip at propulsion, whist not containing bulk rubber where it’s not required.

DS Trainer 22 is a fantastic accompaniment to the runner who moves with ease but trains plenty. It can be used for racing because of its low weight and suitability for the non-sock wearing racer, as well, it is adequately gripped for groomed trail running.

The real drawcard of the DS Trainer 22 is its ability to cope under large mileage. Most lightweight performance shoes deform quickly in the midsole or the upper loses structure quickly. This shoe will take everything you can give it and will support your foot and offer protection needed to prevent over pronation in the rear foot.

If you are looking to try out the latest range of ASICS Flytefoam featured footwear or are keen to get yourself into a shoe that is lightweight and durable, visit the intraining Running Centre in Milton or Indooroopilly. Test the shoes outside in real world conditions and see the results for yourself.

Racing in new shoes

How late is too late to change shoes before a big race? There are no hard and fast rules, but essentially it’s never too late. And besides, rules are made to be broken aren’t they?

Rule 1: If it’s not broken, don’t fix it

Whilst old shoes are comfortable and familiar, they’re tired from all the training you’ve done! Shoes lose cushioning, and responsiveness as they age, and the older your shoes are, the greater your injury risk. You may have forgotten how good a new pair of shoes can feel to run in! You’ll know as soon as you do that your old shoes are ready for the garden.

Rule 2: Don’t try anything new on race day

Running in brand new shoes on race day is not recommended, but it has been done many times before. The cushioning materials used to manufacture shoes these days are fantastic. Your shoes should be comfortable right from the get go, and you shouldn’t need to wear them in at all.

However, it’s still recommended that you run in new shoes a couple of times during training prior to race day. Ideally you want to purchase new shoes a couple of weeks prior to race day, and run in them a few times. If you’re running in a different type/style of shoe compared to what you’re used to, it can take a couple of runs to get used to a different feeling.

Running in a more relaxed and controlled environment means you have the time and ability to deal with potential issues, should they arise. Doing some longer running as well as some faster speed/tempo efforts in these shoes during training will ensure that the shoes will be comfortable and suitable for your race.

Safety tips

10 safety tips for runners this Autumn

As the warmer months have come to an end in Queensland, it is time to start thinking about increasing your awareness of your surroundings – especially if you run in the early morning or evenings when it is dark.

Here are 10 tips to keep you safe this season

1. Always run against traffic
It’s easier to avoid cars if you can see them coming. You want to be able to see headlights of oncoming cars. Avoid busy roads and those with no shoulders or sidewalks.

2. Choose a well-lit route
It might not be your favorite route to run, but the most well-lit route is your safest choice. Oncoming cars see you better, and you’ll always be able to see the road and avoid potential hazards.

3.  Be visible
If you’re running in the early morning, night or at twilight, ensure you wear white, yellow, orange clothes or other bright coloured clothes. Avoid wearing black and dark colours so you are easily seen. Also, make sure you have reflective gear on. Most running shoes and clothing these days have reflective material (see Asics Lite-show) but it doesn’t hurt to add more. If you can, a running light is a very inexpensive way to be seen (lightweight flashing lights are available at intraining) by all users of the road.

4.  Always have identification on you
Take some form of identification with you at all times, in case of emergency. We recommend obtaining a copy of your drivers licence and having this laminated or a simple piece of paper with emergency contact details and next of kin. This can be easily stored in your pocket or within a lightweight running belt (see spiBELT available in store). Make sure it is not too hidden as you want it to be easily found should something happen.

5.  Vary your routes and times
Potential attackers can study runners’ routines and loom in a particularly dark or isolated area. Don’t make yourself an easy target by always running the same route at the same time. Change it up, not only will it be safer, but it will keep things interesting and ensure your body has some variation.

6.  Run with a buddy
As the saying goes, strength and safety in numbers. If possible, try to run with a friend and seldom run alone. Look for running groups that run at night (see intraining run club), if that’s the best time for you to run. If you do run alone, make sure someone knows the route you’ll be running and approximately how long you will be out.

7.  Carry your mobile phone
You’ll be able to contact police immediately if something happens to you or you notice anything out of the ordinary. intraining have some great products that are comfortable to run with and can hold a variety of items, including mobile phones, gels, keys etc..

8.  Watch out for bikes and runners
Even if you’re running on a path or in a park with no cars, always be aware of other runners and cyclists. Before you stop or turn around, make sure your path is clear. This advice applies to running in both daylight and darkness.

9.  Ditch the music
Try to avoid wearing headphones when running in the dark. Cutting off your sense of hearing leaves you at a disadvantage. You can’t hear oncoming cars, cyclists, dogs, or any other potential threats. If you absolutely have to run with music or some other distraction, keep the volume very low or run with one earbud out so you can still hear what’s happening around you.

10.  Common sense
If you feel that you’re entering an unsafe situation, use common sense and run to a safe location. Call police if you notice anything suspicious.

We hope you enjoy the cooler months ahead. It is a fantastic time to run in Queensland with cool and crisp mornings and evenings. Keep safe and enjoy your next run.

Fuel your run – by Liz Lovering (dietitian)
Carbohydrate and fat … is there a ‘best’?
Our daily food choices provide us with the energy to move and although many nutrients are involved in energy production the two main ones are carbohydrate and fat.

Glucose (obtained from carbohydrate foods) is a very efficient fuel as it can provide energy quickly, without oxygen or when oxygen is a limiting factor (high intensity running). However once we slow down and more oxygen becomes available the contribution of fat as a fuel increases. These different energy systems work… click here to read the full article ‘Fuel Your Run’ in the January edition of ‘From the Sole’ newsletter.
