Running, Walking and being active is essential for your mental health and fitness.
“There is an inverse correlation between exercise and depression… Do it, run my beautiful intellectuals, run”, Tim Minchin, 2013
The impact of physical activity and stress is such a common topic studied with more and more evidence to show the direct link between them. You will see many of these articles shared amongst all our running Facebook communities. As runners we know this and have read them with a somewhat “I told you so” mentality… because we know and love it. Then we talk with our running buddies as we pound the pavements for hours sharing our glee of what’s finally being proven to the rest of the world.
Now, with the change in the environment we are forced to run solo or with the minimal company. Our communities in the real, non-virtual world have been cut, and there is not a group around that makes us set our alarm at 5 am, forcing us out of bed. Your commitment to running will be tested, and you will need to work just that little be harder to keep going. It is possible that on some days, you may even need to remind yourself of those reasons you tell your children why they should run!
While both the routines and physical act of moving are important, you are also stimulating the chemical and neurotransmission of endorphins. Endorphins are our natural runner’s drug designed to give us the runners high and simply feel good after a run. Endorphins are certainly part of the physiological process to help relieve stress
So…. as the year unfolds, you know you have to keep going. Your routine, your early wake-ups and your motivation to stay sane. We all need to keep managing however things move ahead. As your own family becomes closer, and new house rules and responsibilities are allocated, you may need even to ask your loved ones to send you out the door if you haven’t run, simply to get your ‘feel good runner’s high’, and possibly to not be so cranky.
Finally, you should never be trying to go forward alone. We are lucky to live in the age of technology to be able to connect virtually, and you need to remember to ask for help if you find yourself not able to wake up and enjoy the simple pleasures of running, walking, cycling and being outdoors.
Stay healthy, stay connected and keep running.
Margot
